FOREWORD:

Our forefathers laid the foundation for a civilization that is the envy of the whole world.  It has brought us a greater spiritual and material wealth than any people has ever known.  This is our heritage.  It is a challenge; our responsibility, our duty to improve it and guard it.

Democracy is a dynamic experiment which is experienced anew by each generation.  While America today is the beacon light of a disorganized and disillusioned world, it is our to determine the character and quality of society and our citizenry of tomorrow.

We strive to give recognition to the ideal of human values,  the dignity and worth of the individual.  The Americanism activities defined by the Legion embrace many phases of an individual's relationship to his community, state and nation.  They are designed to create improved living for every individual, recognizing all the unalienable rights of man and the human qualities of mind and heart.

PREAMBLE TO THE CONSTITUTION OF THE AMERICAN LEGION

FOR GOD AND COUNTRY WE ASSOCIATE OURSELVES TOGETHER FOR THE FOLLOWING PURPOSES:               To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America;  to maintain law and order;  to foster and perpetuate a one hundred percent americanism;  to preserve the memories and incidents of our associations in the great wars;  to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the Community, State and Nation;  to combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses;  to make right the Master of might;  to promote peace and good will on earth;  to safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom and democracy;  to consecrate and sanctify our comradeship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness.
